Combining Teaching and Cosmetic Knowledge: The advanced Body Sculpting Institute
I come from a long line of teachers; teaching has been the primary profession in my family for the last three generations. So when I took the career path of a doctor, I kept my eyes open for how to integrate teaching with my own medical expertise. I finally found that opportunity with the Advanced Body Sculpting Institute .
I have a long track record of embracing breakthrough technologies, exploring new aesthetic devices and developing expertise on new techniques before many other doctors have the opportunity. So many times, I have been approached by cosmetic companies, which ask me to lecture on their behalf. And after participating as a teacher in several classes for new doctors, I realized there was a tangible need for improvement.
I remember when I came up with the idea of the advanced Body Sculpting Institute; I had just finished several lectures in Italy, Portugal, and the United States. I realized that there was both an opportunity and a need for doctors to have a place to go after residency, in order to learn how to us new technologies. Too many doctors are willing to assume that, after buying a machine, they will already have the necessary experience to use it. That would be like buying an airplane, and assuming you can pilot it!
About the Advanced Body Sculpting Institute
For that reason, I created the Advanced Body Sculpting Institute in September 2005. At first, the Body Sculpting Institute was such a new idea that we had to break through some barriers in order to establish it.
For example, most state medical boards don’t allow out-of-state doctors to practice. Since we wanted to bring cosmetic experts in from all over the world, you can see how difficult a problem that would be! We worked with the Colorado state medical board in order to make sure that we could bring in experts from outside the state to learn and to teach.
We also set up a national insurance policy dealing with malpractice issues for training purposes. This has never been done before, and logistical hurdles dogged us for a while. But we were undeterred: I strongly felt that doctors needed a space to learn new technologies, and I was unwilling to compromise on either safety or quality of teaching.
I want to talk a little more about the Institute in my next blog post; I really think education is incredibly important, so important that I can’t sum it up in just one blog post!!!

People may think of Beverly Hills as the beauty capitol. After all, it’s the height of Los Angeles chic, with tons of celebrities showing up in the media every week, with perfect faces and perfect bodies. So it’s easy to assume that Beverly Hills is the place to go for cosmetic surgery.
What some patients may not realize, however, is that it may be better to travel outside of Beverly Hills to look for the best cosmetic options.

Who is not a good candidate for either traditional Liposuction or VASER Hi Def?
Dr. Millard feels that this is an interesting question because some patients who come to us for VASER Hi Def lipoSculpture procedures aren’t necessarily good candidates.
For them to have a sculpted appearance in one part of their body yet have a flaccid appearance in another part of their body would not necessarily make them look natural. We often refer these patients on with the same technology traditionally either the VASER or Laser technique to have a more traditional approach to their fat removal.
What plan of action / offerings do you have for these patients?
For a patient who doesn’t necessarily have the lifestyle whether it be nutrition, dieting or exercising, we first of all counsel patients that have liposuction and VASER Hi Def which are both techniques and are part of the program. A successful body sculpting patient whether it be traditional liposuction or VASER Hi Def requires a lifestyle they are continuing.
For the patient who currently has a good lifestyle, we came up with a concept called bod:evolve. Bod:evolve isn’t only an approach to patient ‘s for body sculpting using liposuction techniques and technologies but we work in conjunction with the gym, in our building with personal trainers who will address the patients needs for understanding how to start and continue exercising. We also provide nutritional counseling for these patients so they can make lifestyle changes and learn to make them most successful in there liposuction experience.

Liposuction is not for all patients. Patients who do not have a good exercise regimen or a great dieting history may perhaps benefit from some preoperative counseling in these areas before proceeding with liposuction. On occasion, liposuction can be used as a jump start for both dieting and exercising.
One interesting note, many of the VASER Hi Def LipoSculpture patients actually go on from their procedure to have improvements in their workouts, most notably because of increased motivation to want to work out harder to maintain their results. This can also be seen in some of our traditional liposuction patients.

Millard Plastic Surgery Center in Colorado is rapidly becoming an International destination for plastic surgery, most notably liposuction, body contouring and breast surgery.
In recent months Dr. Millard has had patients fly in from Japan, England, Ireland, Asia, Africa, Canada, Israel and France.
Dr. Millard has also been named as one of the worlds top cosmetic plastic surgeons in Tatler’s 2008 Beauty and Cosmetic Surgery Guide. Dr. John A. Millard and Dr. David Broadway are proud to announce that their surgery center is opened. Dr. Millard and Dr. Broadway feel that this is a huge mile stone for them. The surgery center is totally dedicated to cosmetic and plastic surgery.
The unique situation about having a surgery center in the same building is that a patient can get the complete experience in our office-building. There is a fitness center, physical therapy, day spa, med spa and a very nutritional cafe located all in one building.
