3rd Generation SmartLipo Triplex Has Arrived

We are excited to announce the arrival of the 3rd generation SmartLipo Triplex machine at our facility. Dr. John Millard is excited about this newest version of the popular SmartLipo body sculpting procedure, because the Triplex is allowing for a faster, more pain-free recovery. Patients are experiencing significantly less bruising and an overall more comfortable healing process. We are utilizing this Triplex technology for both minor procedures under local anesthetic, as well as in our main operating room under Local IV anesthesia. Dr. Millard showcased a 44 year old female patient who had Vaser Hi Def Liposuction to her abdomen and fat transfer to her breasts. Her results are amazing! The patient worked out daily and watch what she ate, but like most of us, had fat in areas that just wouldn’t go away with regular exercccise and a healthy diet. Genetics play a big role in where we have stubborn fat deposits. That’s where Vaser Hi Def Liposuction comes in. Dr. Millard is able to remove the fat and actually sculpt the body to make it have a more athletic appearance. With this particular patient, he then took some of the fat that he had removed from her abdomen and put it in her breasts. Fat Transfer to the Breast!

Finally, we have the technology to transfer fat from out “problem” areas to our breasts! Something us women have been waiting for, years. We used to joke about it, asking why can’t we take fat from our love handles and transfer it up here, to our breasts? It’s a fairly new technique in which we are still perfecting. Dr. Millard injects fat, more than necessary, into the breasts because not all of the fat will “take”. Typically, your breasts would be taped after surgery for a couple of weeks and then into a support bra for a few months. It is important to keep the newly planted fat as still as possible for about three months. Hence the reason you’ll wear a sport bra for so long.

This technique allows women to have fuller breasts without having implants. Although, the gel implants are FDA approved and are said to be safe, some women simply prefer not to have a foreign body for breast enlargement.

VASER Liposelection vs MPX SmartLipo

There are several differences and several similarities between the two technologies. Both technologies require three steps. The first step is the infusion which consist of the injection of the tumescent solution. The second step is the “melting” of the fat either by ultrasound with VASER or laser with MPX. The third step is the actual suction of the emulsified fat. The VASER has been around longer and tends to be used in the main surgery center while a patient is under anesthesia. The MPX is typically used in the minor procedure room where the patient does not have to be under anesthesia. The MPX is used for smaller areas in which we could complete in less that 3 hours. If we do much more than this, the patient tends to get uncomfortable, even though they are given oral medications to help them relax. The VASER is quite speedy and can pull fat off a bit faster than the MPX but tends to be more uncomfortable for a patient if they are awake. Hence the reason we use anesthesia while using the VASER. Finally, the MPX is known to have a bit more skin tightening effects. The VASER does show some, but the SmartLipo tends to tighten more and is good for arms, necks and inner thighs.

Liposuction side effects

When considering liposuction, there are several post-operative things to be prepared for. One of the most commonly reported side effects is loss of sensation in the areas treated. This numb, tingly feeling can last for awhile, each patient being different. One could expect numbness to last anywhere from 3-12 months. This might sound excessive, but keep in mind the trauma to your body and the nerves being disrupted. It takes time for the nerves to “re-connect” and for you to feel sensation again. Touching the skin can help speed up the process, stimulating the nerves. If you can enter into your surgery being aware of this, you will more likely tolerate the numbness better knowing that it is considered normal and part of the healing process.

Medications to avoid before Plastic Surgery

It is important to avoid several types of medications prior to and following surgery. One specific type of medicine is anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, Motrin and Aspirin. These medications are blood thinners and could cause potential problems if taken 2 weeks before and after surgery. Celebrex is the only anti-inflammatory that you can take without being at risk of bleeding. It is an expensive drug that many insurance companies will not cover. However, Dr. Millard highly recommends it after large liposuction cases because of the amount of swelling. If Celebrex is taken, not only does it help reduce swelling but also helps relieve pain and speeds up the recovery. It allows patients to wean off their pain meds faster and return to their normal activities.

Liposuction: Drains

Dr. Millard’s practice consists of many out-of-town patients having liposuction. In many cases, our patients have to leave Denver with drains in. It is important to keep the drains in place long enough to prevent the risk of developing seromas. If we pull them too soon, there is an increased risk of seromas due to excess build up of fluid underneath the skin. Seromas are considered minor complications, but can be easily be taken care of with no long term complications. However, they tend to be a nuisance. If patients have to return home with drains, we simply have them see a physician in their area to pull them when it is time. There are still risks of developing seromas after the drains are pulled but the risk is much lower than if we remove them too soon.
