Denver Plastic Surgeon, Dr. John A. Millard, is busier than ever these days thanks in part to first lady Michelle Obama’s well toned arms.
Mrs. Obama’s arms have graced the cover of Vogue and People magazine. She’s dazzled us in a sleeveless dress worn to the president’s joint session of Congress.
The first lady has been an inspiration to those of us over 40 who hit the gym with the best of intentions. But unfortunately, many of us are unable to find the time and/or the energy for the 90 minute 5:30am workouts 3 times a week that the first lady adheres to with her personal trainer. But thanks to Denver Plastic Surgeon John A. Millard, there is help for us.
In a surgery lasting less than three hours and possibly not requiring a general anesthetic, Dr. Millard is creating toned and athletic looking arms using either the Vaser Hi Def Liposculpture technique or the Smartlipo MPX machine. The results are toned but feminine, easy to achieve, relatively inexpensive, and permanently retained with the adherence to a healthy diet. Call me to discuss this procedure. You’ll love it.

My personal experience withSmartlipo…
I am a 34 year old female and I live in Denver Colorado. On February 13, 2009 I had Smartlipo MPX on my hips and flanks (on my back side right above my butt). I am a person who is very sensitive and squeamish to anything that is medical! But, I have to tell you- that this procedure is an incredibly easy one to get through and recover from. The procedure began at about 3:30pm on Friday 2/13 and I was done at about 6:30pm. I was given an oral narcotic, to relax me about 1 hour before the surgery was scheduled to begin. Then the doctor marked me with marking pens to ‘draw or map’ where he was going to do the liposuction. I had my procedure done under tumescent anesthesia (where they numb the area and inject fluid into the area- you are totally awake for the entire procedure), so I was able to have it done in the doctor’s office- not an operating room. They had me lay face down on the operating table and the doctor began by numbing the area with shots and injecting fluid into me. All of this sounds painful, but trust me I am such a baby, and this was all more than tolerable. It reminded me of getting Botox in a way! Except it was on the top of my butt! After I was completely numb and filled up with fluid, the rest of the procedure of melting the fat away with the Smartlipo and then sucking it out took about 2 hours for a total of 3 hours. After the he was done, he stood me up (and I was pretty wet from all the fluid they put in you) and I was helped into a garment that looks like something a wrestler would wear! It’s made of spandex and it has the crotch cut out so you don’t have to take it off every time you go to the bathroom. You are supposed to wear this garment for at least a week. After that, I went home and I had someone stay the night with me to make sure I was ok. I felt totally good for the 1st2 days, then after that I felt a little ‘washed out’, like I didn’t have very much energy. At 2weeks post op I was still slightly tingly and numb, and I didn’t like to be touched in that area, although it didn’t hurt, it was just uncomfortable. My swelling had gone down drastically, and I was feeling pretty much 90% normal if not more. After having Smartlipo myself, I can tell you that I would highly recommend this surgery to anyone!

It was upon me. The dreaded High School reunion, and it was a big one. I was well prepared for my 40th birthday when it arrived. I had spent my 39th year dieting, exercising and injecting. When I opened the email from Classmates.com and was reminded of our planned reunion, I wondered how this date had come upon me so quickly, and how I could have forgotten it. I hadn’t budgeted for the little nip and tucks I had thought about doing prior to this reunion. I also hadn’t allowed myself a lot of time for recovery. I thought about what procedure would fit my budget. I was willing to skip my twice daily trip to Starbucks. What procedure would give me the most bang for my buck by shaving years off my looks, be minimally invasive, and require only a few days for recovery? Dr. Millard had the answer. Smartlipo. He suggested sculpting my jaw line and my arms, two areas of a woman’s body which are considered areas of beauty, but areas I had begun to hide rather than accentuate. Not only was the fat to be removed, but the added benefit would result in overall tighter skin tissue. And I could go to my reunion looking like myself still, only younger and firmer. And on budget!

Back to the double wave…
Arms!
When Caroline Kennedy first announced she was throwing her hat into the ring to run for Hillary’s Senate seat, Caroline was filmed by the press wearing a sleeveless dress. I’m sure it was a very expensive designer dress, but all I noticed was her “double wave”.
Last week on the t.v. show Brothers and Sisters, Sally Field’s character was lamenting grow older. She stated, “I now think twice before putting on a sleeveless dress”.
At Barack Obama’s inauguration, Mary J. Blige looked stunning until she raised her arm at the finish of her song; the Double Wave.
Can you tell I’m on a mission?
Women in their forties and fifties have a new enemy to contend with! It’s the double-wave! Nothing says youthful appearance like a slinky sundress- but as you get older- the sundress becomes your arch enemy! Let Dr. Millard help you regain that youthful appearance by sculpting your arms with Smartlipo. It’s a minimally invasive surgery, with limited down time for the patient. This procedure is one that can fit into anyone’s budget. If you think you might be a candidate for this procedure, or would like more information, please contact our office at 303-792-5665 or send us an e-mail at info@millardplasticsurgery.com.

Another successful Smartlipo Course by Dr. Millard!
This weekend, most people did what they love to do; they relaxed and watched the Super Bowl. John A. Millard, MD did what he loved best this weekend as well- he taught 8 Doctors the Fundamentals of Laser Lipolysis. 7 of these Doctors were from the United States, and 1 came all the way from London. It was a fantastic course! Dr. Millard is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to liposuction and body sculpting. Dr. Millard is president of the Advanced Body Sculpting Institute, a training company that trains Doctors from all over the world in the art of Liposuction.
If I was looking for a surgeon for liposuction, I would definitely want the best of the best- and that is Dr. Millard. I would want to know where my surgeon would go if he or she wanted to have lipo done on themselves. I can tell you that Dr. Millard does a lot of liposuction and body sculpting on other Surgeons. To me, that is a true testament to his impeccable reputation for being a Top Surgeon for Liposuction.
If you would like more information on Liposuction or Vaser Hi-Def, please give our office a call at 303-792-5665 or send us an e-mail at info@millardplasticsurgery.com and we would be happy to talk about these procedures with you.

Let’s Say Good-Bye to the Double Wave
Women’s fashion magazines, daytime talk shows, my personal shopper at my favorite boutique. What do they have in common? They all tell me women over fifty should not go sleeveless. But try finding a pretty little holiday top, a sexy New Years Eve dress, a Mother of The Bride’s dress, or a feminine summer shirt.
If these special pieces of clothing have sleeves, chances are you will not feel as though you appear special in them. Why? Because arms and shoulders represent youth, beauty, and sensuality. Beautiful arms and shoulders help guide your eye towards a woman’s breasts, to the woman herself. She may be your life’s partner, a politician running for office, a motivational speaker, a Real Estate agent or a teacher. A well defined arm, such as those created by Dr. John A. Millard with Vaser Hi Def Liposculpture, will end the double wave and return the focus on the woman as a whole, and what she may be saying or doing. When I raise my arm to waive good-bye, let me feel confident that the attention I receive in return is on my smile, not on my double wave.

I want to talk about cosmetic surgery for the body, and how that works with body wellness. All too often, people see the two as antagonists. Liposuction, for example, is often considered as a failure for a person’s fitness regimen. The idea is that you don’t need a cosmetic procedure, if you’re doing your fitness regimen correctly.
I’d like to offer a different interpretation. As a cosmetic surgeon, I’ve done procedures on patients with less than 10% body fat. These are people who are physically fit, who work out regularly and who watch out for their bodies.
With traditional liposuction, around 50% of lipo patients work out regularly or semi-regularly. In contrast, approximately 95% of the patients who come to us for body sculpting procedures work out. And we’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of patients who work out regularly. I’ve had patients tell me that they take their exercise more seriously, after having a cosmetic procedure which shows them just what their body is capable of looking like.
I believe that the new generation of body sculpting technology would be better considered as an adjunct to a person’s fitness regimen, and not its opposite. Body sculpting can be used to target genetic problem areas, areas which may never see significant improvement even with a regular work-out regimen. Instead of getting discouraged by their lack of results in the weight room, patients can use liposculpture to augment their results, and further motivate them to ascend to new heights of personal fitness.
Wishing you good health,
Dr. Millard

Who is not a good candidate for either traditional Liposuction or VASER Hi Def?
Dr. Millard feels that this is an interesting question because some patients who come to us for VASER Hi Def lipoSculpture procedures aren’t necessarily good candidates.
For them to have a sculpted appearance in one part of their body yet have a flaccid appearance in another part of their body would not necessarily make them look natural. We often refer these patients on with the same technology traditionally either the VASER or Laser technique to have a more traditional approach to their fat removal.
What plan of action / offerings do you have for these patients?
For a patient who doesn’t necessarily have the lifestyle whether it be nutrition, dieting or exercising, we first of all counsel patients that have liposuction and VASER Hi Def which are both techniques and are part of the program. A successful body sculpting patient whether it be traditional liposuction or VASER Hi Def requires a lifestyle they are continuing.
For the patient who currently has a good lifestyle, we came up with a concept called bod:evolve. Bod:evolve isn’t only an approach to patient ‘s for body sculpting using liposuction techniques and technologies but we work in conjunction with the gym, in our building with personal trainers who will address the patients needs for understanding how to start and continue exercising. We also provide nutritional counseling for these patients so they can make lifestyle changes and learn to make them most successful in there liposuction experience.

Liposuction is not for all patients. Patients who do not have a good exercise regimen or a great dieting history may perhaps benefit from some preoperative counseling in these areas before proceeding with liposuction. On occasion, liposuction can be used as a jump start for both dieting and exercising.
One interesting note, many of the VASER Hi Def LipoSculpture patients actually go on from their procedure to have improvements in their workouts, most notably because of increased motivation to want to work out harder to maintain their results. This can also be seen in some of our traditional liposuction patients.
