In a recent edition of USA Today, cosmetic surgery centers offering quick, outpatient procedures such as liposuction and fat transfers as low-cost alternatives to complicated time-honored treatments, were brought to light as having commoditized the plastic surgery industry. With a focus on a speedy, inexpensive turn around rather than patient safety, care and satisfaction, the business is booming all whilst utilizing sales personnel for consultations and diagnoses.

It goes without saying that entrusting your body to the hands of a doctor who may not be Board Certified is a decision any patient should not take lightly. Many patients have been lured into various surgeries by way of advertisements and deals touting low-cost and rapid recovery. Rather than have a consultation at a reputable hospital or surgical center, these low-cost medical centers perform in office consultations, often without the surgeon present. A sales representative proposes procedures and recommends in-office treatments as a lower price alternative to a surgical center with full anesthesia. Inadequate patient screening and follow-up falling well below par is the result of highly pressured sales representatives. The goal being: low cost surgery with extremely high volume.

As explained in USA Today, “They’ve created these kind of fast food courts where people go in, pick from a menu of what they want done and the physician who meets with them is not necessarily the doctor who operates on them and he’s not the one who follows up with them,” says Soto’s lawyer here, Spencer Aronfeld, who is representing other Strax patients. “This is a recipe for disaster.” (September 15, 2011)

Making the decision to invest in plastic surgery is not something to take lightly, in fact, potential cosmetic surgery patients should take time to find a surgeon whom they trust and feel entirely comfortable, in addition to researching the surgeon’s credentials. Experience and Board Certification play a tremendous role in the level of treatment a patient will receive. Boutique surgical centers where pricing may be higher are often leaders in the industry and are at the cutting edge of technology. You may pay more, or even have a longer recovery time, but you can be rest assured that your procedure will be performed by the same surgeon who conducts your consultation, and will take place in a certified surgical center. You are guaranteeing yourself the best result possible.

As you begin to examine your options when considering a plastic surgery procedure, keep in mind that any surgery is somewhat invasive and you should be sure you are in the hands of a knowledgeable, experienced and Board Certified surgeon. At Millard Plastic Surgery, our patients receive the highest level of care and attention, with their safety first and foremost.

Our low-volume, boutique style process presents patients with the highest level of service, technique and attention to detail. Our surgical team collectively offers a host of certifications and years of experience, with an impeccable safety record and a passion for the industry vastly surpassing the masses.

If you are considering cosmetic surgery and believe you may be a candidate, contact bod:evolve today. We are happy to answer your questions and look forward to helping you achieve the look you desire safely and successfully.

Dr. John Millard featured in ABC News article on a growing trend: men seeking cosmetic surgery procedures.

More men go under the knife, seeking a youthful and ageless appearance.

Recently featured in an ABC news article, Dr. John Millard shares new American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) data: more men are seeking cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Millard was quick to explain that the number of men receiving cosmetic procedures at his practice, both invasive and non-invasive, is on the rise. Recent studies have shown that a significantly smaller percentage of men are known to act on their desire for plastic surgery as compared with women. Dr. Millard and plastic surgeons across the board believe that trend is changing.

The rise of reality television has contributed to more men feeling like cosmetic surgery is acceptable, explained Dr. Millard. “Because they see people like themselves having surgery, the guy-next-door, not just the rich and famous, men can really identify with these people. They hear why they do it and they relate to it.”

Although cosmetic surgery and other luxury services have seemingly taken a toll from the economic decline over the last few years, the market for cosmetic procedures may be turning around. Recently, plastic surgery has seen a 5% increase and surgeons suspect this upturn will continue. In addition to the increase in procedures, the proportion of men receiving treatment is also on the rise. According to ASPS, 8% of cosmetic procedures were performed on men in 2008 as compared with 13% in 2010.

In addition to facial procedures, many male patients come to Dr. Millard for body sculpting techniques, which will restore a youthful physique to the body. He speculated that there is increasing competition in the workplace from younger, more technology savvy coworkers, and many men are seeking ways to appear more youthful and fit.

As the trend for male cosmetic procedures continues to grow, they may just catch up to women faster than the market ever imagined.

Denver cosmetic surgeon Dr. John Millard now offering patients fat and stem cell storage for future regenerative procedures.

Dr. Millard of Millard Plastic Surgery Center, a leader in Denver Fat & Stem Cell Storage

Always a leader in cosmetic surgery techniques and advancements, Millard Plastic Surgery Center is paving the way once again by offering fat and stem cell storage to patients. Fat and stem cell storage affords patients the opportunity for future use in reconstructive procedures and therapies. Recent developments in cosmetic surgery have begun to utilize a patients own fat for fillers in areas of the buttocks, breasts and even the face. The use of a patient’s own fat in place of synthetic filler offers an extremely safe all natural practice, avoiding the use of a foreign material.

The recent discovery that fat cells contain high percentages of stem cells has proven that stored fat can be utilized in the future should a patient require reconstructive surgery or the need for cardiovascular therapy down the road. When having your liposuction treatment, consider this: have your fat cells stored at Millard Plastic Surgery Center through the use of Cryogenics (processing and storage at very low temperatures) and be assured that should you require reconstructive treatment in the future, you have set the stage for natural and effective therapy.

Call Millard Plastic Surgery Center today to discuss your options with Denver Fat Cell Storage.

Bod:evolve, a world leader in cosmetic body solutions, has announced surgeon John Millard M.D., will be the first surgeon to perform a stem cell enriched cosmetic procedure. This cutting-edge technology allows patients to use their own naturally occurring fat-derived stem and regenerative cells during cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

During the procedure, a patient has fat samples removed from the body via liposuction. The fat is then scientifically processed to extract the stem and regenerative cells that naturally reside in the tissue. These cells are combined with an additional sample of your natural tissue to form a cell-enriched graft that can be used as a natural regenerative filler, bonding with your existing tissue. The use of regenerative cells in the graft enables the transplanted fat graft to successfully integrate with the surrounding tissue, with zero risk of rejection by the body.

According to Dr. Millard: “By sculpting a patient’s physique using their own adipose-derived stem and regenerative cells, we essentially change the anatomy of a patient so their results will naturally age and evolve along with the rest of the tissue in their body. “

This revolutionary technique can be used in a variety of manners. One example is for breast augmentation patients. By using your own cell enriched tissue, you can retain the natural look and feel of your breasts, while at the same time providing an increase in cup size, without introducing a foreign substance into the body .

If you’re seeking a natural way to restore or enhance the look of your body, this progressive approach may be your answer.

How hernias can affect liposuction

Hernias and Cosmetic Surgery

When a patient comes to Dr. Millard for a consultation he always does an exam to determine if the patient is a medical candidate for the procedure they desire. Typically if a patient is here for liposuction or a tummy tuck, Dr. Millard will check for hernias. Umbilical hernias are the most common hernias, which people can live with forever and never know it’s even present. If you have an umbilical hernia, you were most likely born with it. It’s not typically anything to worry about, unless you decide to have abdominal surgery, such as liposuction or a tummy tuck. When Dr. Millard inserts the liposuction cannulas through your belly button, an umbilical hernia can increase the risk of a cannula going through the abdominal wall into the area of your organs. Dr. Millard’s goal is to stay above the abdominal muscle with the liposuction cannulas, to avoid any contact with internal organs. If Dr. Millard thinks a patient may have a hernia, we refer them to a general surgeon to have it officially diagnosed. If so, the hernia can be repaired the day of your surgery or ahead of time, depending on your general surgeon and your insurance requirements.

Breast implants can be placed over or under the chest muscle. Most of the time, they are placed under the chest muscle in order to help hide the implant and produce a more natural result. Once someone has implants under their chest muscle, it is advised that they avoid any direct chest exercises altogether, i.e.: bench press, chest flies and push-ups. If a patient is a competitive athlete, or works-out aggressively, Dr. Millard would have a discussion with the patient in order to determine what the patient is willing to give up or not give up in their exercise regimen. For instance, if a patient is a weight lifting competitor, and cannot give up chest exercises, Dr. Millard may advise to place the breast implant over the muscle. This decision is based on a case by case scenario.
